Wolf
I walk inside trying not to run. A big guy like me scares people when I head in their direction at a speed other than a snailâs pace.
I meet Hunter, whoâs led the client to the VIP area and introduced me. Again. The fucker doesnât even remember my name, and Iâm not a forgettable kind of guy. Our celebrity offers us a drink which we both decline. He proceeds to ignore us and talk to his guests.
Hunter runs me down on the schedule, then goes and checks in with all the guys before he takes his position on the other end of the VIP room.
I scan the dim club and find her almost immediately. Sheâs leaning against the bar talking to Caleb, theyâre giggling as they look around and sip their drinks. I wonder how many sheâs had. A new song starts and Caleb shrieks while Red smiles. Sheâs radiating energy and happiness; in fact, I donât think Iâd ever seen her so happy, so relaxed. Maybe itâs because she thinks Iâm still outside. I ignore the thought even as it makes my stomach coil.
They weave their way through the throng of people toward the dance floor.
Music blares everywhere and the dance floor is full, bodies moving like a singular wave, clashing against one another in churning swells. Limbs and torsos twisting and flailing.
Caleb points to the middle of the floor but Red seems content to stay on the fringes, the edges, like she always doesâand then she starts dancing. Sheâs a mesmerising fucking distraction. She shuts her eyes and lets her body move, her hips roll with the music as she moves around, a total oddity in a sea of sameness, and I notice and then I notice everyone else notice. And they are all fascinated, like me, by this new, rare thing that doesnât fit in. Sheâs still a cog, and without her, the machine would fail. But somehow, she doesnât fit anywhere.
I donât like the other eyes on her and grind my teeth, my jaw already aching. I swivel around when a hand tries to reach up to my shoulder, and I find my new client leering at Red.
âSheâs something, isnât she big guy?â
I fucking hate it when people call me that. âSure thing, sir.â
âGo get her for me.â
âExcuse me, sir?â
âJust march yourself up to her and ask her to come join me here.â
âSorry sir, thatâs not part of my job description.â
He glares at me like Iâm stupid, and I donât know who pays for my next meal, âIt is tonight.â
âSorry sir, I canât leave you unguarded.â
He pouts and taps my hand like itâs okay.
Of course, itâs fucking okay. It takes all my energy not to punch him in his smirky little face.
âRight, well good jobâ¦?â
âWolf, sir.â
âYou howl at the moon, Wolf?â
I donât reply and a minute later heâs back with one of his guests, âCan he go and get her?â
âIf you want him to, sir.â
âI do.â He gives me a sly grin, and I want to break every last one of his perfect white teeth.
